Changes of Synovial Membrane in the Knee of the Rat after Intra-articular Injections of Osmium Tetroxide, Yung-Sa and San-Gol.

Abstract
The changes of rat synovium after intra-articular injections of Osmium tetroxide, Yung- Sa (Hg-compound) and San-Gol (copper pyrites) were investigated using histological method. The results were summarized as follows.
After intra-articular injection of Osmium tetroxide into rat knee joints, the-entire synovium and adjacent subsynovium underwent necrosis.
All cells of the synovium were dissolved 24 hours later.
By-five weeks after the intra-artcular injection, significant regeneration of-the synovium was begun.
Regeneration of the entire synovium was completed 12 weeks after intraarticular injection of Osmium tetroxide.
After intra-articular injection of Yung-Sa particles in. the knee joint result in necrosis of the partial synovium and much of the subsynovium.
The changes of synovium after-intra-articular injection of San-Gol particles were not significant.
Yung-Sa and San-Gol particles, which were injected into the joint cavity was phagpcytized by macrophages and leucocytes, and carried it out the subs yiiovi l tissues. Synovial lining cells took up small amounts of Yun-Sa and San Gol particles. Some Yung-Sa and, San-Gol particles passed directly throughI the synovial surface. -These results indicate that Yung-Sa and San-Gol are unsuitable agents for chemical synovectomy.
